Turn your old photo printed on modern digital albums

Although digital cameras have been around for a few years and are increasingly and more popular than many of us still have a large number of older film camera paper prints, slides and negatives. Most people keep paper copies and negatives in their homes and only use digital formats for new photos they shoot with their new digital cameras. In this article we will discuss converting your old paper prints in digital format.

The pictures are usually kept at home in one of three formats:

  • Paper impressions: the most common format, usually with a size like 4X6 and 5X7. Over time paper prints tend to lose their quality. Depending on how well maintaining the document could become double yellow colors fade forces.
  • Negatives: also known simply as film. This is the processed film usually 35mm from which the prints where made. Despite the negatives can be damaged over time, are more likely to maintain high quality. Negatives are hardly used unless needed new paper prints.
  • Slides: very similar to the negative used for projecting photos on a big screen.
  • There are many advantages to digital photography. After your photo album in digital format that allows you to print Paper copies easily either at home or use a printing service to see the photos on the computer, to share pictures with friends and family and perhaps most important Archive your photos to virtually for eternity. So if the digital format is that good why not convert all those old photos and negatives traditional paper to digital? Here's how:

There are different considerations for converting paper to digital. Professional photographers spend a lot of time and money this process. For most fans and consumers of very simple methods can be used to cheaply and easily. Scanning paper prints and negatives need a computer and considerations different. For most users scan the negatives is not necessary.

Scanning photos from the paper copies

Photo Paper prints are easy to scan. You may choose to explore on your home (purchasing a scanner that can do the job is usually cheap and costs less than $ 100). Also may choose to mail them (or part thereof) to a professional service that are digitized scan and email a copy of the originals and a DVD with digital scans (such Services include www.digmypics.com, www.digitalpickle.com, www.britepix.com and many more)

There are pros and cons to scanning at home or with professional services. If you have a small number of photos scanning at home is easier. If you have a bunch of photos using a service can be easier, but you can end up spending more money. Also an email from her and only on paper of your photos is a risk because they might miss.

If you are going to scan at home in mind:

  • Resolution: The resolution of a scanner is measured by the number of dots per inch that the scanner can produce. Most scanners can scan at 1200 dpi or more. In general, the scanner can be configured to scan at different resolutions. The higher the resolution, the slower the scan and the bigger the file size of photos will be. For most scanning paper copies from 300 and 600 DPI is enough but you can experiment with higher resolution scan if you feel better outcomes.
  • Speed: If you have a small number of pictures of speed is not a problem. If you have hundreds or more of photos scanning speed becomes important. To quickly you would have to scan explores the lowest possible resolution that results in good enough scans – for most paper prints 300-600 DPI is enough .. Also if you go to buy a scanner check the scanning speed (usually measured in the number of readings per minute be sure to check the speed the Department of Public Information to be used).
  • Photo feeding: if you only have a small number of photos is not a problem. If you have many photos make sure the scanner you buy allows fast and easy loading of photos. Some high-end scanners will allow load a stack of photos, and will be reflected automatically and scan for you. These scanners are the right choice if you're planning on scanning hundreds or more photos.
  • Scanning negatives and slides

scanning negatives and slides of exploration is more difficult for copies on paper. In most cases it is easier and cheaper to perhaps use a professional scanning service (such services include www.slidescanning.com, www.myspecialphotos.com, www.pixmonix.com and many more). If you want to scan at home your standard flatbed scanner will not suffice. In most cases you will need to spend money on a film / slide scanner. The scanners are more expensive than flatbed scanners of paper. Negatives and slides are small high-resolution sources and therefore require further analysis DPI of paper copies. In most cases 2400 dpi or higher should be used.

The considerations for scanning negatives and slides are similar to scanning paper prints. If one needs to scan negatives or slides speed and ease are not important, but if you will scan hundreds or more you should spend more money on scanners that can feed the negatives or slides automatically or you can simply load a roll film and scan it.

The good news is that in most cases negative scanning is not necessary at all. For most fans and consumers scanning paper photo prints at home is more than enough and the exploration of the source is a negative is not necessary. It is recommended, of course, to keep the negative in a safe place. You can use the digital for the future exploration of the views or simply to see the computer screen and share with friends and family.

To complete your document scanning photo prints is easy. You can make yourself at home or use a professional scanning service. You can convert all memories in digital format with a small investment and ensure that you can enjoy the photos and also keep them in their original quality for eternity.
