What kit do you need to photograph a wedding?
Unfortunately there is no single answer to this. It's really varied. A lot I know photographers demand the latest, fastest digital SLR and as far as they are concerned, nothing else to do. But that's not how we were working a few years ago. High speed auto focus is relatively new and photographers, some are rebelling against that and pay a small fortune for lenses designed with manual focus in mind, as they once were provided.
What was not long ago I was being told by many professional photographers digital does not compete with the film and therefore a waste of time. At that time I had a Mamiya 120 roll film camera and an early Olympus held digital camera. I ignored the advice of the photographers, who told me that there was no future in digital and showed pictures of my clients and my clients potential. At that time there was a bit of an argument started and so many photographers were writing articles about digital quality anywhere near as good as the movie. When asked if he was going to shoot your wedding digital or film, I replied that this was his choice and showed him the results of my work in both chambers next side. 100% 4-megapixel digital selected on medium format film. Never looked back. Interestingly I recently found myself defending friends who have chosen to stay with film. What works do for them and while I would not do myself I can see why it is good for certain business models and photographers determined. digital is not necessarily easier or cheaper than film.
My personal opinion about the cameras is that most end middle and high-end digital SLRs are more than capable of providing a basic tool to photograph a wedding. I do not want to talk now about what you need to know to photograph a successful marriage because that issue is not a test. The short version is a good few seasons of wedding photography. Then there is the processing, digital imaging, design the album, presentation, promotion of wedding services. The book will have to come later.
So let's do this simply and actually pretend are gray in black and white and I will talk more about my personal preferences now and how I would build a camera bag from scratch, if only had money and my knowledge, but not the big pile of equipment that currently carry. I guess for this scenario to work, we must provide some kind of event where my camera and kit bags were burning and I have an insurance claim to start. The idea fills me with fear but if he did and if I, this is probably what you would do the following:
First get a hammer and batteries flash – Metz or Quantum
Then, a camera bag a few – a large bear of a day kit Complete all together as a Lowepro Commercial AW or similar. Also a smart backpack, or a Lowepro Bilingham and then also some portfolios are well padded, as the Billingham Hadley or one of the types Tamrac shoulder.
Manfrotto Tripods & Monopods. A very big tripod, a standard and a monopod.
All this is quite but now stars simple complicated.
Lenses. I wish you a great variety from fisheye to 300 mm, and a macro lens for fun. I do not necessarily take with me all the objectives for each job. Will vary depending on what the place offers. The macro is unlikely to be with me at night. There is a strong argument for prime lenses, but lenses are heavy and one has to think about how useful it can be a time carrying a number of them, so maybe a low prime lens light level photography and differential focus, a cousin to the macro and also the fish-eye focus and then the rest Zoom or we will be like a camel broken.
Personally I am very interested in the new 18-200mm zoom lens. When you work quickly, you can do so much with one of them. You can be in a small area organization of a family group photo at the end of 18 mm, but then if you are waiting for a person to complete the group can make headshots of all with the same lens zoom to 200, while you're waiting.
Camera body: Whatever works. Something nice fit in all the previous talks politely to my flash and has a good feel for it.

After that no longer toys. I especially like controls autometers remote at this time. Also I have a silent high-end camera snapshot and between Autometer and the camera in silence, we have made some very good photos in churches where the images during the service were not allowed on the basis that clicking and flashing can be distracting. Since the camera does not blink in silence or clicks, we believe they are doing good for the church and the couple, as a good record of events, where they said there would be none.
