Buying Water Filters – Let me tell you something
There is a lot of hype and questionable claims about water filters in the media. It is difficult for the average consumer to understand the different methods and types of water filtration systems without having to buy all the talk of sales.
Water filtration or treatment itself is a pretty big issue with many methods and technologies involved. Most water filters home / systems treatment are designed to remove various contaminants such as chlorine, lead, mercury, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), Total Solids Dissolved (STT), Cryptosporidium, chloramines, pesticides, herbicides, Giardia and the bad smell or taste elements.
Differences in characteristics and function
Most water filters work in the same general process. The water is passed through a filtration agent (physical, chemical or ultra-violet), where the pollutants are removed or neutralized. The treated water is then either distributed outside the system or stored in a storage tank for future use. In general, most water filters are fairly simple and inexpensive items that are not very different from one manufacturer to the next. Below is a list of features and functions you should consider before buying a water filtration system.
1). Filtering Technology
The first and most common species of filter uses a physical barrier to remove suspended particles such as mud, silt, sand, rust, and microorganisms such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Physical filters are measured in microns. The finer the filter the smaller the number of microns and more types of particles can be removed from raw water.
Another type of filter uses chemical processes to remove or neutralize potentially harmful contaminants in the raw water. Depending on the type of pollutant, the filter elements may include carbon activated, copper, zinc, etc.
The newest form of filtration technology is to use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria, viruses or pathogens in the water. Ultraviolet light is usually contained in a tank-water is treated by either when in the store or run through a can of ultra-violet. Faucet Mounted: These systems are cheaper and easier to install without however, offer the least amount of filtration. The system is mounted on the key itself and provides treated water to the faucet itself.
All House: These systems filter water are often the most comprehensive and costly type of filter that will be needed for a home or office. These systems connect to the piping before entering the house or office which means that supply treated water to the whole house or office. These water filters are generally quite expensive to buy and maintain, however, all the water in the house in question.
Water Softeners: These types of water filters specifically used to remove only some types of pollutants, ie unwanted elements such as calcium, magnesium, lime and iron from a home water supply. These elements make the metallic taste and salty water.
Dispensers / jug water filter: These systems are typically very simple filter assemblies that are built into a jar / dispenser. Again, this type of filter is very simple and cheap yet not filter contaminants compared very well with the most complete examples.
Portable: These water filters are made to be portable, some are designed for camping and travel light weight, while some are incorporated into the sports drink bottles. 3). Capacity
