The little-known micro-nutrients that are crucial in the battle against aging
Nutritional science is increasingly interested in potential certain micronutrients, which seem to be of particular importance in the fight against aging. The so-called anti-aging micro-nutrients include lipoic acid, and the amino acid, carnitine.
Both lipoic acid and carnitine are produced naturally by the body through normal metabolism of food, but what is particularly interesting for anti-aging researchers is that the body's ability to synthesize these two compounds appear to decrease significantly with increasing age.
Both lipoic acid and carnitine, the latter in particular, are very important in the complex processes through which food is converted by the body energy. The lipoic acid is also an important antioxidant, fighting free radicals that are a major cause of cell damage that can speed up the process aging and even contributing to the onset of degenerative diseases that are the source of much misery in old age. Lipoic acid is removed from plasma very rapidly blood, which to some extent limits its value as an anti-oxidant in its own right. However, the fact that lipoic acid is readily absorbed into the body's cells in this way could be indicative of its importance for other functions. In addition, there is now good evidence that lipoic acid supplementation can help reverse the age-related decline in cell concentrations of vitamin C and glutathione, which are, respectively, the most important water and fat-soluble antioxidants, and therefore critical in the battle against aging.
Both lipoic acid and carnitine have also been found to be essential for the proper functioning of the cellular mitochondria, the major producers of energy within the body. What is particularly relevant in the field of anti aging is that the heart it is very crowded with mitochondria, and this vital organ, not only consumes enormous amounts of energy, but is unable to store energy for more than a few minutes. The proper functioning of the heart, and therefore life itself, is highly dependent on the proper functioning of mitochondria, which is particularly prone to decrease rapidly with age.
The powerful anti-oxidant functions of lipoic acid appears to be important in protecting the mitochondria of cells from the damage, carnitine, while working to maintain the supply of energy to the mitochondria through the metabolism of essential fatty acids are the main energy source of the heart, metabolism, which otherwise decreases significantly with age. But the potential anti-aging benefits of lipoic acid and carnitine do not end with the heart. Acid lipoic acid, in particular, is now widely used by therapists to improve nutritional nerve damage and pain caused by diabetes, and there is some evidence that carnitine may be helpful in this regard. Experiments in older animals, like rats and dogs have suggested that supplementation with lipoic acid and carnitine You can also have significant effects in improving brain function, memory, especially in the short term, and this is not really surprising since mitochondrial damage is strongly associated with age, dementia and diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
There is evidence that mitochondrial damage in brain cells may be largely due to increased free radical activity caused by the accumulation of excess iron, copper and other minerals that occur naturally in the body. Exciting, it seems that lipoic acid can actually reverse the buildup, back to the levels of these minerals to those found in younger animals. More than this, the capacity lipoic acid to remove excess metals from the body has led to the use in the removal of more harmful substances such as lead and mercury, and suggests that the substance may have a capacity of more general detoxification, used even in cases of acute intoxication by alcohol or drugs and damage.
Finally, is now widely accepted that many cancers are found in root diseases of degeneration, therefore becoming much more prevalent as the population ages, and having their origins in long-term damage to cells caused by free radical activity. Given this, it is believed that anti-oxidant function lipoic acid, and role in stimulating the activity of vitamin and glutathione, can also play an important part in the battle against cancer. Lipoic acid is also known to help activate many genes that are vital weapons in this battle. It is recognized even by his defenders that much research more is needed, but nevertheless, it is interesting conclusions.
Despite all this, however, orthodox medicine is typically reluctant to endorse the use of supplements of lipoic acid or carnitine, but not appear to be no concerns about toxicity with anyone. adequate doses appear to be in the range of 100 mg, Lipoic acid 300 mg and 500 mg in January – 000mg of carnitine. But while these doses should be sufficient to generate the overall benefits of anti aging in people healthy, nutritional therapists and doctors often recommend much higher intakes for the treatment of certain diseases such as diabetes and promote weight loss.
