a little help with macro photography?
i have a Nikon D40 with the standard Nikkor 18-55mm lens witch comes with it in the kit.i cant shoot macro photos…i just dont know how.I put in macro mode but it wont focus in on any close objects…is it even possible to shoot macro photos with it?
As mentioned before, your 18-55mm lens won’t focus on anything closer than 11-inches. So, if you want create macro photographs, you have a few options:
1) Buy a new lens. I’ve been using Nikon’s 105mm Lens for years and it’s one of their sharpest lenses. And, because it’s f/2.8, it makes a good lens for portraits (the small aperture gives nice out-of-focus backgrounds) and for low-light photography.

2) Attach extension tubes to your existing lens. Your 18-55mm is probably not the sharpest in the world, but if you can’t afford a new lens, a set of three tubes will cost less than $200. You attach one or more of them between the camera body and the lens. This causes your lens to focus differently: you’ll be able to get very close and fill your frame with your subject. While the tubes are attached, you won’t be able to focus on distant objects, so they are only for macro work.
Extension tubes have no glass in them so they are very simple devices. Just make sure you get the auto model so you can use your camera’s autofocus and metering. Even though manual mode works best in a lot of macro situations, having the auto option comes in handy.

3) Buy a Close-Up Lens. These actually screw onto the end of your existing lens like a filter. Don’t cheap out here. The cheap ones are not sharp. Unfortunately, it looks like Nikon has discontinued their Nikon 3t Close-up lens. So, you’re best bet is the Canon 500D (or the 250D).
Since it’s a screw on filter, it will fit any lens. You’ll need the 52mm size for you lens. If you upgrade later to the Nikon 105mm macro lens, it also uses a 52mm filter, so you can add this filter/lens to get even closer!
